Which wild animal did Theodore Roosevelt famously refuse to shoot?

In 1902, during a hunting expedition in Mississippi, Theodore Roosevelt famously refused to shoot a black bear. The animal had been chased to exhaustion by hounds, bludgeoned by a guide, and finally tied to a willow tree to provide the President with an easy target. Roosevelt, a seasoned hunter who valued "fair chase," deemed the situation entirely unsportsmanlike and declared he could not look his children in the eye if he killed the helpless creature.
